New Adoption Program Kennel Space Opens

Thursday, January 24th marked the grand opening of No More Homeless Pets in Utah's new kennel space. As part of our adoption program for 2008, Gateway to Canine Partnerships is kindly allowing us to use some of their kennel space located at 40 North and 800 West. This new space will allow us to house up to 12 adoptable dogs in addition to those animals already in foster care.

Thanks to the team of dedicated volunteers who helped staff clean and brightly paint the space. Canine residents have since moved in and give their new digs a five star wag. We are currently working on plans for a separate space for adoptable cats.

Kennel Volunteers and Foster Homes Urgently needed!

We are looking for responsible volunteers who can commit to a regular weekly 1-2 hour shift to clean, care, and play with our adoptable dogs at the our new dog shelter. Various morning, midday, and evening shifts are available. Also, dog and cat foster homes are desperately needed so we can rescue more cats and dogs from local shelters. Could the Strut Volunteers BE any cooler?

People who volunteer for No More Homeless Pets in Utah come from all walks of life. Some are teenagers completing school service learning projects, some are professionals looking to spend time working for a cause they love, some are stay at home moms or dads, and others are retirees. What they have in common is a love of animals, and a desire to make a difference.

Our volunteers do office work, help out with the animals at adoption events, serve as volunteer committee chairpersons for Strut Your Mutt and other special events, take on construction projects, and dozens of other important jobs. Whatever your skills are, we can probably put them to good use.

You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer for No More Homeless Pets in Utah, however, volunteers 14-15 years old may volunteer as long as a parent or guardian is present.

Volunteer Training Schedule

During training sessions, new volunteers learn about No More Homeless Pets in Utah's programs, watch a video, and fill out a form that lets us know where their interests lie. Each session takes about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Training sessions are held on most Wednesdays (call Maranda, above to confirm prior to attending) at 6pm at the No More Homeless Pets office: 324 S. 400 W. in Salt Lake City. Our office is on the second level of the building.

 

 

 

 

Volunteer Spotlight - Roger Simmons

Roger Simmons starting volunteering for No More Homeless Pets in Utah last year and he has become a regular at adoption events ever since. The NMHPU Adoptions staff refers to him as part of the “Dream Team” as he is such a big help cleaning up on Sunday afternoons. He is also on the Super Adoption committee as the Finance Chair and handles all technical aspects of the payment booth.

Originally from North Carolina, Roger relocated to Salt Lake to further his career as a software engineer. Roger says he spends way too much time in front of a computer, so he started volunteering to provide an escape. He enjoys the instant gratification he receives from seeing great matches between animals and happy families. Says Roger, “The ones waiting their turn are simply happy to get out and go for walks. It gives me a positive outlook and is something I can look forward to during the week.”

Roger is unable to have pets here, but back home his best friend “Mango” lives in rural North Carolina with his parents.  Mango is a 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel and has traveled all over the country with Roger. During Christmas of last year Mango got lost and tragically was struck by a car. Luckily, the driver was kind enough to take Mango to the vet. Unfortunately, Mango’s nametag was missing, but because of his microchip, he was reunited with his family. Roger was devastated and spent his Christmas vacation going back and forth from the clinic to visit him. Fortunately, after lots of surgeries and therapy, Mango survived. Roger says it is a miracle and is grateful to have his buddy back. He tries to visit him as much as he can.

Q: What is the No More Homeless Pets in Utah Pet Foster Program?
A: The Pet Foster Program helps to recruit as many foster parents as possible. Our goals are to promote the joys and needs of pet fostering in the state of Utah and to provide educational materials to develop successful foster programs.

Q: What is a pet foster parent and what do they do?
A: A pet foster parent provides temporary, in-home care for friendly kittens, puppies, dogs, or cats until they can be placed for adoption. Foster homes make it possible for us to rescue homeless animals from a variety of situations by providing these animals with temporary care and shelter until they are adopted. Foster homes are asked to provide foster animals with plenty of love, adequate food and water, shelter from the elements, and exercise. Administering medication may also be required. In addition to providing the basics, foster homes may also be asked to transport foster animals to veterinary appointments and adoption events.

Q: Why are pet foster parents needed?
A: We can only rescue as many animals as we have room and staffing for. Local animal shelters euthanize dozens of healthy and friendly animals each day to make space for the new ones coming in due to limited holding space. Local animal rescue groups have to turn away dozens of adoptable animals each week because they lack foster parents. Not only do foster parents maximize the number of animals rescued, they also help to care for animals that would be difficult to care for in a shelter or kennel environment such as orphaned or feral kittens, animals recovering from major surgery, or dogs and cats needing one-on-one behavior rehabilitation or a break from the shelter.

Q: Who should foster?
A:

• Someone who cannot, at the moment, adopt a pet for its entire lifetime
• Someone who is not sure how their current pet would get along with a new cat or dog.
• Someone who loves pets and has some room to welcome them while they wait for an adoptive home.

Q: What does it cost?
A: All pre-arranged veterinary costs associated with approved foster homes, are paid by No More Homeless Pets in Utah. In some cases, we also provide food and litter. Any financial donations that the foster home can make towards fostering will be greatly appreciated.

Q: I already own a dog and a cat. Can I still foster?
A: Before you bring a foster animal home, consult with your veterinarian to make sure your own pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations. You may wish to ask your veterinarian if your pets need any additional vaccinations. Some foster families delegate a spare room for their foster pet so that their own pet isn't stressed by repeated new animals in their territory. This is common for cat fosters. Some foster families own pets who enjoy the company of the foster pets and give the foster free run of the house. If your pet has a history of aggression with other animals, you may want to reconsider fostering and look at our other volunteer opportunities.

Q: Can I adopt the animal I foster?
A: Yes. Foster parents who wish to adopt the animal they foster go through the same screening process as adoption applicants.

Q: I have decided that I want to join the foster program. What's next?
A: We will ask you to fill out a foster home application. You may download this form, or we can fax or email you a copy. Once you have filled this out, we will review it with you over the phone. After you have been approved, you will be asked to attend a No More Homeless Pets in Utah volunteer orientation and also a foster home training. Once this has been completed you will be given a foster home handbook and will be asked to sign a foster home agreement form. If you have pets of your own, those pets must be up-to-date on their vaccinations. Some other requirements may apply, depending on the individual needs of a particular pet. Pets needing to be fostered will be matched with a particular foster parent based on the pet's needs and compatibility with the foster parent.
